Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Global Showcase 2015

On 25th March at the NFTE Global Showcase* 2015, over 400 attendees made up of student and teachers delegations from 29 locations around the world, NFTE alumnus, educators, partners, sponsors and potential investors gathered in the beautiful and historic Gotham Hall, New York City to honour outstanding young entrepreneurs and teachers of the NFTE programme.

Proudly representing Singapore as Global Young Entrepreneur and Global Enterprising Educator respectively for the Showcase was Xavier Tan, a Secondary 4 student of Westwood Secondary School and Mr Mohammad Shahril, a teacher from Evergreen Secondary School. As Singapore’s representative, Xavier was given the opportunity to display and sell his business idea, Cafe on Wheels – a mobile double decker bus that provides coffee and food to lower income areas in Singapore at affordable prices to attendees of the Showcase.

At the Showcase, Xavier delivered an impressive, professional presentation with a variety of marketing collaterals ranging from menus, brochures, name cards, pull-up banners and even a 3D prototype of his mobile cafe. He took every opportunity to capture the attention of all who passed by his booth with his pitch. His teachers and other attendees remarked that Xavier made a deep impression with his confidence, determination and passion.

In addition to the Showcase, all attendees were also given the rare opportunity to go on a guided tour of the United Nations Headquarters, experience the beautiful sights and sounds of New York City and participate in a personal branding workshop by the brand and marketing gurus from MasterCard.

Upon their return from New York City, both Xavier and Shahril had this to share about their overall NFTE experience:

“This NFTE course has helped me to identify myself, my strengths, my weakness and to seize any opportunities that comes in my way. It has further affirmed my beliefs that owing a business as a young entrepreneur is possible if I set a goal and work towards it. I’ve also learnt how to be a leader who is able to lead, manage and most importantly have the passion for the work, willingness to contribute and set good examples. I would like to continue chasing my dreams to become an entrepreneur and an exemplary leader both in school and in my community.”
– Xavier Tan, Best Business Plan winner (Singapore) and NFTE Global Showcase Young Entrepreneur

“I’ve definitely seen the transformation of the students who went though the NFTE programme as they were given the opportunity to be exposed to so many things that they normally would not be. In terms of creative thinking, personal development and life skills that is not covered by mainstream education. The activities were always relevant and at the same time, the students were also taught the 21st Century Competencies framework. I would definitely continue teaching the curriculum in my class.”– Mr Mohammad Shahril, Best Educator (Singapore) and NFTE Global Enterprising Educator
