In an increasingly V.U.C.A (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world, it is important for students to be able to recognise opportunities, continually adapt to changes and innovate in the face of challenges with confidence. Therefore, we believe it is essential to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. To put it simply, it is to see a problem and to solve it by thinking out of the box.
Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) is an entrepreneurship programme for underprivileged youths to educate and inspire them to stay in school, recognise business opportunities, and plan for successful futures. Teaching students through experiential learning about business fundamentals, we see how they develop an entrepreneurial mindset and have a significant boost in their confidence.
NFTE originated from the United States of America and was introduced in Singapore by Halogen Foundation Singapore in 2014. The programme has more than 29 years of track record in empowering more than 700,000 young people from low-income communities through programmes across the globe.
As part of the programme, Halogen conducts a pre-programme and post-programme survey. Based on the Entrepreneurial Mindset Index (EMI), we measure the student’s assessment of their capabilities and understanding of the NFTE programme and how they perceived themselves before and after the programme.
Using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, we saw students who have gone through the NFTE have seen an increase in their confidence in areas such as communication with their teachers and students. The programme has also given them more motivation to study hard and do well in their academics.
Halogen is offering NFTE programmes for schools/ organisations that have 60% of youth aged 15-19 under the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) and/or from challenging and disadvantaged backgrounds (indicators such as low household income level, low education level or divorced/ single parents).
A highlight of the programme our top NFTE is to participate in the NFTE Global Showcase held in USA that celebrates the global impact by honouring top NFTE Global Young Entrepreneur from all the communities we work in worldwide. Together with the NFTE Young Entrepreneur, teachers are also recognised as NFTE Global Enterprising Educator for the hard work put into bringing using the NFTE programme to affect change in resource-challenged schools globally.
